My name is Desiree. I am currently pregnant with my first child due May 13, 2013.
I became homeless around August of 2012. I recently found out I was pregnant and was jumping from house to house. In December 2012, I was sent to Joyner Resource Center to do volunteer work so I can receive TANF through DHS. While doing community service hours, I was able to also gain a caseworker, Joyce Williams, who then referred me to MELD.
I entered the Shelter December 29th. While living in the Shelter, I was given the opportunity to work at the Share Stuff Store through the Meld Employment Assistance Program (MEAP) for 10 hours a week. This job helps me to pay my rent and buy necessities for the baby and myself.
Around March, I moved into my own apartment through MELD’s Transitional Living Program. I now have the stability I need for my unborn child and myself. MELD is also going to pay for me to take the Certified Nursing Assistant courses at Rockford Career College starting July 22, 2013. Becoming a CNA will help me get a better job and allow me to become self-sufficient.
Because of MELD I was able to accomplish all the above things and now I have a safe environment for my baby. I appreciate everything MELD has helped me gain.
